Our family made the trek across the Sonoran Desert from California to Arizona in the summer of 1970 and almost immediately began working in the pest control business. My father started work as a salesman for one of the oldest companies in the valley. He introduced many sales and marketing techniques that were novel at the time and helped to grow that business exponentially in the proceeding years.

Three of my older brothers learned quickly and started their own business. All they really needed back then was a truck and a spray can and they were off and running. Following my father's example they grew fast and probably a little too fast. Eventually they went their separate ways dividing their business geographically each taking their "territory" in the valley.

I was 14 years old when I started "spraying" houses. Yes that is what we called it because that is what we did. We used five horse power Briggs and Stratton engines to create 40 and 50 foot streams of pesticide to soak down the outside of homes. The patios were soaked and the eaves were dripping or you weren't doing a good job. When products got better and land smelled a little less like a petroleum refinery customers would question if we were mixing it strong enough. My how times have changed. I worked every summer and weekends and admittedly I even skipped school if my brothers had a route and no one to run it. It was unpardonable to miss work or reschedule a route. Customers always came first and we learned quickly that once a route was missed it could never be made up.

I have brothers and sisters that still own and operate pest control companies. Nephews, nieces and even family friends have worked from time tor time in the industry or started their own business that are still going strong.

In 1980 at 18 I started my own company, Greenway Pest Control later I added Kelly's in front of that name. I was happy and successful for 12 years. I began to wonder if this would be it for me here I was thirty years old and I had been doing the same thing for more than half my life. I decided I would sell my business to a trusted friend and try something new. Well guess where I wound up right back in the pest control business but this time I was hired by a large locally owned company to developed and grow their commercial division. This was quite challenging as I had no commercial experience. I approached it as I did my own residential business. I always tried to tell it like it was and to treat my clients as I would want to be treated. I can't tell you how many times a client thanked me for keeping a promise. I could not believe it people were actually amazed that someone would do what they said they would do.  We grew and were considered a premier company that had a reputation for solving problems and being fair.

I told my wife that I really liked my job and I would be glad to work there forever. That being said our little going concern caught the eye of Orkin and they made my boss an offer he couldn't refuse.I had the option of joining the new company but it just didn't seem like a good fit for me.

I had friend from a trade organization I belonged to that was looking for a replacement for her position as she was being promoted. I accepted their offer and went to work for that little company named DuPont. Yes that DuPont. I became the Vice President of Marketing for Arizona and Nevada in their flooring maintenance business, DuPont Flooring Systems. Although flooring maintenance was not my area of expertise customer service was so I learned the part I did not know and went to work helping to make our branch one of the most successful in the company. After about five years there I told my wife that I really loved it and I could see myself working there forever. You probably all ready guessed. This giant 200 year old fortune 14 company sold their entire billion dollar Nylon division to another conglomerate. The new company had no interest in the flooring business, they just wanted DuPont's Nylon making factories. Goodbye DuPont! I greatly appreciated my time their and I learned so much that has helped me get to where I am now, Exit Pest Control.
